This expansion is so big it practically feels like a sequel. Although it can take a little getting used to, and that might be my only complaint with it. The Knight’s sumbawa toto slash was very easy to understand and get a feel for—giving players a pretty wide berth for extending jumps.

It’s not an expansive or complex game by today’s standards, and so parts can be underwhelming if you’re coming from a more modern Metal Gear. But it often shows how good stealth-action mechanics can age well, and the political drama with Kojima’s signature brand of campiness is intact. To me, these are the things that make Metal Gear so memorable – and while some of it is eyerolling, the emotional highs of Snake Eater’s story still hit as hard as I remember. Part of me is still curious about why this was made if it wasn’t going to come with more substantial changes outside of the big visual upgrade. However, if I were to point someone to one of the many versions available, this is the one I’d recommend, whether they’re revisiting or playing for the first time. Kojima and the original team may not have been involved in this remake, but the spirit of Snake Eater persists.

However, you couldn’t cut these things out and still call this Snake Eater. Arrowhead Game Studios’ fun and hilarious shooter was the big breakout hit of the year, quickly enlisting millions of new recruits for its galactic space war. Gameplay in Hell is Us is split almost equally between whacking enemies and running around, and this pacing generally works. Exploration rarely feels dull, but combat falters in a few key areas. On normal difficulty, with weapons leveling organically and the healing mechanic mastered, only rudimentary strategy and occasional blocking are required. There’s little reason to dodge or parry; button mashing, using weapon abilities, and knowing when to deploy the drone usually suffice. There are sliders to adjust enemy health, damage, and aggression, but that only partially addresses the issue, and it’s odd that by default the game feels like it’s on easy mode. Unfortunately, a number of big delays (Breath of the Wild 2 and Starfield among them) took some of the wind out of this year’s sails.

This Definitive Edition cleans up some of its shortcomings and lets a new generation of players experience it for the first time. On the other end of the spectrum, the game constantly doles out weapon modules, first aid kits, resist items, and other consumables to fill the inventory, yet most are unnecessary. On default difficulty, it’s possible to run through nearly the entire game without using any of it. Again, most players will need to tweak enemy stats to make finding loot feel meaningful.
